Sardar Antaji Mangeshkar Gandhe, one of the most celebrated leaders of the Delhi-based army of the Maratha Empire, was a visionary and patriot who played a significant role in spreading and defending the empire. Born in 1695 in Ahmednagar district’s Supa province, Maharashtra, he belonged to a poor farmer family. Severe famine forced him to move to Kannauj, where he studied war and administration. He studied war and Sufi music under Pt. Ramchandra Bhatt and Haiti Baba, and his versatile personality. True to his word, Shrimant Shahu Maharaj inducted Antaji into his private staff when he ascended to the throne in 1708. During the expansion of the Maratha Empire under the Peshwas, Antaji was conferred the rank of Sardar (Knight) and then entrusted with great responsibilities. Antaji was appointed Governor of Delhi and, through the Ahmadiyya Agreement of 1752, appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Maratha army in North India.

Sardar Antaji Mangeshkar Gandhe ruled from 1729 to 1757, directing a series of effective assaults against foreign aggressors and ensuring Maratha supremacy in North India. He was an untiring leader, establishing stability in administration so that the saffron flag fluttered unfettered everywhere. Twice he expelled Ahmad Shah Abdali from Hindustan, revealing his exceptional bravery and motherland patriotism. Along with his military conquests, Antaji was liberal in his thoughts as well. In 1754, on the martyrdom of his son, he staunchly opposed Sati Pratha tradition and issued orders against it, creating an excellent precedent of social reform. His rule was characterized by justice, discipline, and liberal ideas. His dedication to the Maratha Empire and Hindustan never faltered until his actual death. Regrettably, on 18 January 1761, when he was returning from the Third Battle of Panipat, he was ambushed and assassinated near Farrukhnagar. His ultimate sacrifice is celebrated as a source of hope in India’s resistance to foreign invasions. In gratitude to his titanic contributions, India Post proudly releases a Commemorative Postage Stamp on his 261st martyrdom anniversary, recalling his valour, leadership, and unyielding patriotism for the country.
