The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) was founded on March 28, 1972, through a memorandum signed by the Government of India and the Ford Foundation.Covering around 6.5 million square kilometers across 55 countries and supporting a population of over 2 billion, ICRISAT’s research is centered on crops such as millets, sorghum, chickpeas, pigeon peas, and groundnuts—nutritious, climate-resilient staples for dryland agriculture. ICRISAT’s expertise spans genebanks, genomics, gene editing, modern crop breeding, climate-smart agriculture, and agribusiness, all aimed at supporting smallholder farmers globally. Partnering with the Government of India, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), ICRISAT has positively impacted farmers in India and sub-Saharan Africa. This collaboration leverages innovative ideas and tools, informed by ICRISAT’s 50 years of experience and deep understanding of regional agricultural needs.

By working with diverse public, private, and international research partners across Asia and Africa, ICRISAT scales scientific innovations tailored to local policies, markets, and socio-economic conditions. Together, they aim to improve crop productivity, farmer incomes, and resilience of dryland communities, transforming dryland agriculture from subsistence to a profitable, sustainable enterprise. To honor ICRISAT’s 50 years of dedication to reducing poverty, hunger, malnutrition, and environmental degradation, the Department of Posts has issued a commemorative postage stamp celebrating its achievements in dryland agriculture.
