Rani Durgavati, the fearless queen of the Gond kingdom of Garha-Katanga, is a timeless personification of courage, leadership, and sacrifice. Born on October 5, 1524, at Kalinjar Fort, Uttar Pradesh, to the illustrious Chandela dynasty—which was famous for its architectural wonders such as the Khajuraho temples and its fight against foreign invasions—she was named after Goddess Durga and lived a life worthy of the fierce goddess’s reputation. She married Dalpat Shah, the son of Gond King Sangram Shah, at the age of 18 and created an alliance between the Chandela and Gond families. She was regent after Dalpat Shah died early in 1548 for her adolescent son Bir Narayan and governed as wisely and energetically as anyone could have. Under her rule, Garha-Katanga prospered beyond measure. She experimented with progressive governance, promoted education, and commissioned major public works such as the building of reservoirs such as Ranital, Cherital, and Adhartal, bringing water security to her people.

A warrior by nature, Rani Durgavati led her armies personally to protect her kingdom. She repelled many invasions, the most prominent one being against Baz Bahadur, Sultan of Malwa, during approximately 1555-1560. But the greatest trial to her came in 1564, when Asaf Khan, governor of Kara-Manikpur on behalf of the Mughals, attacked her state without provocation with an immense host. Despite being overwhelmingly outnumbered, the queen put up stout resistance to the Mughal armies and routed them three times before she was overwhelmed by their colossal cavalry, infantry, and guns. On the fateful 24th of June, 1564, she received two arrows on her body, one on the temple and another in the neck. Wounded though not prepared to relinquish the struggle, she grasped the intensity of the moment and ended martyrdom using her own dagger to avoid capture at the hands of the adversary. Her martyrdom has been cut in stone as a grandest deed of honor and patriotism. On her 500th Birth Anniversary, Department of Posts Issues a Commemorative Postage Stamp with pride to commemorate the unyielding courage and indefatigable spirit of Rani Durgavati. She is a symbol of national pride and inspiration whose tale keeps on inflaming the hearts of millions.
