Samrat Hemchandra Vikramaditya or Hemu was a great military commander, administrator, and visionary statesman who re-established Hindu supremacy in India for a short while after centuries of foreign domination. Hemu was born in 1501 at Machheri, a small village in Alwar (Rajasthan). He was born in a poor Dhusar Brahmin (Bhargava) family. By sheer will power, intelligence, and martial arts, he achieved success from humble beginnings. Hemu began his career as a goods supplier and eventually supplied saltpeter (gunpowder) to the army of Sher Shah Suri. His exceptional skills were noticed by Islam Shah Suri, son of Sher Shah, and he was appointed as his Chief Advisor. Hemu became the Governor of Punjab and Delhi and was subsequently made Prime Minister and Head of the Afghan Army by Adil Shah Suri. His military tactics and leadership skills enabled him to win 22 wars, suppressing the uprisings and establishing the Afghan hegemony. Hemu was sent to confront Humayun when he came back to India to reclaim the Mughal throne.

Humayun’s untimely death in 1556 created a power vacuum. Hemu took advantage of it and marched forward to occupy Delhi. He defeated a Mughal force at Tughlakabad on 6th October 1556 and the Mughal governor Tardi Beg Khan escaped in terror. He rode victorious into Delhi and was crowned as ‘Vikramaditya’ at Purana Qila—a monument to history—the reinstatement of Hindu rule after centuries. Hemu ruled justly, reforming path-breaking administrative and economic reforms. He defeated corrupt functionaries, boosted trade, and banned cow-slaughter. His rule, however, lasted only 29 days, as the Mughals, under Akbar and Bairam Khan, regrouped and launched an attack. The decisive Second Battle of Panipat was fought on 5th November 1556. Despite his valor, Hemu was struck by an arrow and captured in an unconscious state. Bairam Khan urged Akbar to behead him, earning the title of ‘Ghazi’. When Hemu was assassinated, his army was massacred by the Mughals and his tribe was destroyed, leaving Indian history with an image that could never be forgotten. Historians like R.C. Majumdar views his rebellion to put indigenous rule in power as an “unique episode” in the history of India. Though he was a ruler for a limited period of time, his valour and sacrifice still motivate the generations of the present era. In his honor, the Department of Posts issued a Commemorative Postage Stamp in honor of Hemchandra Vikramaditya as a tribute to patriotism, bravery, and anti-colonialism.
