It has been a pathfinder research institution in advancing the frontiers of basic physics research. The institute came into existence on land generously given by then Maharaja of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. It was served by its first Director, the great Sir C.V. Raman, whose trail-blazing work went on till he suffered a tragic demise in 1970. RRI was the first independent research institute to be funded by the new Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, in 1971.
