Born on February 6, 1874, in Puri, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Prabhupad was the seventh child of Sri Kedarnath Dutta and Bhagwati Devi. He was given several names, with his father, Sri Kedarnath Dutta (later known as Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur), bestowing upon him the name Bimala Prasad at birth. Throughout his life, he often signed his name as ‘Siddhanta Saraswati.’ He is also known as ‘Sri Varshabhanavi-Dayita-Das,’ as mentioned in one Sanskrit text. The Gaudiya Vaishnava Sampradaya honors him as Srila Prabhupad to this day. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta began his formal education at an English school in Ranaghat, located in the Nadia district of present-day West Bengal. Even from a young age, his spiritual inclination was remarkable. By the age of nine, he had memorized seven hundred verses of the Bhagavad Gita in Sanskrit.
