Puran Singh was also a staunch environmentalist, advocating awareness of pollution, soil erosion and sustainable practices. Puran Singh was awarded the Padma Shri award by the Government of India in 1981 for his extraordinary contribution. However, his principles led him to return the award in protest against the Indian Army attack on the Golden Temple in 1984. In 1991 he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian aid work.
