India and Vietnam have a very old, historically based, and strategically important relationship. Its roots lie in their anti-colonial struggle when Mahatma Gandhi and President Ho Chi Minh headed the freedom movement in their nations. India was a contributing participant in the Vietnam peace process as Chairman of the International Commission for Supervision and Control of the Geneva Accord of 1954. Normal diplomatic relations were resumed on a formal basis on 7 January 1972. India-Vietnam relations have been cordial in nature and were elevated to the level of Strategic Partnership at the overall level when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Vietnam in 2016 officially. India-Vietnam relations were further strengthened after India and Vietnam concluded the ‘Joint Vision for Peace, Prosperity, and People’ in December 2020 that provided the contours of cooperation for a couple of years ahead. India’s 50th diplomatic relations anniversary in 2022-23 also coincided with India’s 75th Anniversary of Independence, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
