Ondiveeran, a legendary warrior from the Tirunelveli district, made his way to the Pothigai Hills, under the rule of the small kingdoms of Sirulimuthu Pattavarayan and Thiruneelakanda Pagadai. He is celebrated as one of the first heroic rebels and the commander-in-chief in India’s freedom struggle against the British East India Company. Born in SankaranKovil, in the present-day Thenkasi district, he was the eighth of his siblings, son of Chellaiyah Pagadai and Karuppaiee, who held authority over the village of Nerkattan Sevayal. Ondiveeran was initially known as Muthuveeran. Following the decline of the Madurai Nayaks and the oppressive tax policies of the Arcot Nawab’s revenue officers, Ondiveeran’s family lost much of their wealth and power, including their control of palayapattu (feudal estate). Deeply humiliated, Ondiveeran took a strong stand, especially after 1775 when a succession conflict within the Arcot Nawab’s family allowed the British East India Company to reclaim tax collection rights. In March of that year, Ondiveeran’s forces defeated an army led by Mahfuzkhan, Yusuf Khan, and Colonel Heron in Nerkattan Sevayal.
