Narayan Meghaji Lokhande is the father of the Indian trade union movement. He played an important role in the establishment of the Hands Association in 1884, which was the first labour organization in India. Narayan Meghaji Lokhande was born in 1848 in Thane. He initially worked in the railway and postal departments before joining the Mandvi Textile Mills as a storekeeper in 1870. Before the enactment of the Factory Act in 1881, there were no legal protections for workers in Indian factories. The Factory Act of 1881 introduced some protections for child workers but the concerns of adult workers were largely ignored, resulting in the establishment of the Factory Commission in 1884. Indian Post Department released Narayan Meghaji Lokhande First Day Cover (FDC) in honor of his contribution.
