Somnath Sharma participated in the Arakan campaign against the Japanese in World War II. He earned a mention in despatches for his actions during this campaign, which were gazetted in 1946. Somnath Sharma was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra on 21 June 1950 for his actions in defence of Srinagar Airport on 3 November 1947. After the establishment of Param Vir Chakra, Somnath Sharma was the first to receive this honor. Interestingly, his brother’s mother-in-law Savitri Khanolkar was the designer of Param Vir Chakra. Somnath Sharma, PVC was an Indian military officer. He was the inaugural recipient of India’s highest military honor, the Param Vir Chakra, which he was awarded posthumously. On 31 January 1923, Somnath Sharma was born in a Brahmin family in Dadah, Kangra, Punjab, now part of Himachal Pradesh. His father Amar Nath Sharma also served in the army. Somnath Sharma graduated from the Royal Military College on 22 February 1942. He was commissioned into the 9th Battalion, 19th Hyderabad Regiment of the British Indian Army. In honor of the bravery of Somnath Sharma, the Indian Postal Department released Major Somnath Sharma’s First Day Cover.
