09-08-1983: Meera Behn Miniature Sheet

Meera Behn miniature sheet was issued on 9th August 1983. This miniature sheet was released by the Department of India Post. This miniature sheet was released to honor the Meera Behn and remember her support for the struggle for freedom. Meera Behn committed her life to social work for the welfare of human society.  The real name of Meera Bhen was Madeleine slade but she popular as Meera Behn or Mirabehn. She was the daughter of an English aristocrat, who was born in England. She was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi by reading Romain Rolland’s book on ‘Mahatma Gandhi’. After that Meera came to India in 1925 and made India her home for the next 34 years. She joined Kanya Gurukul in Dehra Dun as a teacher of English. In 1932, she attended the Second Round Table Conference of Mahatma Gandhi. She also participated in the Satyagraha movement. She established Sevagram Ashram in 1942. She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan award by the Government of India for her social work and contribution.
