The Himalayan ecology varies with climate rainfall and soil. Temperatures range from tropical at the base of the mountains to the highest altitudes. Annual rainfall amounts increase from west to east along the southern front of the range. This combination of rainfall and soil conditions supports various plant and animal species. On this occasion, the Indian Post department issued a set of four Himalayan Ecology Miniature Sheets, Blood Pheasant, Markhor, Himalayan Poppy, and Phen Kamal.  An alluvial plain drained by the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers at the base of the mountains, with rainfall varying from west to east. The upper Ganges plains of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are deciduous forests and the Ganges plains of Bihar and West Bengal are deciduous forests.
