A geographical indication is an intellectual property right conferred on a product originating from a specific geographical area with quality that is specifically attributed to its geographical origin. There are several laws and regulations made by the World Intellectual Property Organization and the World Trade Organization to protect geographical indications. On this occasion, Indian Post Department issued a set of twelve Miniature sheets named Geographical Indications: Agricultural Goods Miniature Sheet. An application for a GI tag is accepted after scrutiny of applications by the Geographical Indications Registry in India, after which it is notified in the GI Journal. If no defect is found then it is declared GI. The Government of India passed the Geographical Indications Act in 1999 and it came into force in September 2003.
