Mexico was one of the first countries to consider the independence of India. After that on 1 August 1950, India and Mexico established diplomatic relations. The Indian Postal Department released the India-Mexico Joint issue a set of two miniature sheets explaining the Kalbelia dance of India and the Jarbe Tapatio dance of Mexico, to celebrate the ties between the two countries. Both India and Mexico were traded by Spain during colonialism, which traded with Indian merchants through the Manila-Acapulco galleons and brought their products to New Spain. The first Mexican envoy to India was former President of Mexico Emilio Portes Gil to show the importance of the relationship between the two countries.
