2-05-2007: 2550 years of Mahaparinirvana of the Buddha Miniature Sheet

The Buddha Park of Ravangla also known as Tathagat Sal is located near Ravangla in South Sikkim. It was constructed between 2006 and 2013. It houses a 40-metre-high statue of the Buddha, which is primarily intended to mark the 2550th anniversary of the birth of Gautama Buddha. On this occasion, the Indian Postal Department issued a set of six 2550 years of Mahaparinirvana of Buddha miniature sheets. Made of 60 tonnes of copper, this statue forms the backdrop of Narasimha Parvat. The site was chosen within the larger religious complex of Rabong Monastery, a centuries-old pilgrimage site. Nearby is the Ralang Monastery, a monastery of Tibetan Buddhism. Established through the efforts of the Government of Sikkim, the statue was consecrated by the 14th Dalai Lama on 25 March 2013.
