In 1947, the princely states covered 40% of independent India’s territory and constituted 23% of its population. Important states were the British Political Residence, the Nizam’s Hyderabad and Mysore in the south, and Kashmir, Sikkim and Indore in central India. There was great variation in status and wealth between the princely states, with a 21-gun salute prominent in Hyderabad and Jammu and Kashmir. In 1941, Hyderabad had a population of 16 million, while at the time Jammu and Kashmir had a population of over 4 million. The Indian princes received official allowances as per the terms of accession and maintained their position in internal affairs during a transitional period. ₹560.00
The princely state of India was also called the nominal sovereign of the Indian Empire. It was an entity not directly ruled by the British, but a form of governance by an Indian ruler under subsidiary alliance supremacy. On this occasion, the Indian Postal Department released a set of four Indian Princely states’ miniature sheets. When India and Pakistan became independent, there were officially 565 princely states that contracted with viceroys to provide public services and tax collection. They entered the newly independent nations between 1947 and 1949, and all princes were pensioned off. At the time of the British, 565 princely states were officially recognized in the Indian subcontinent, besides thousands of zamindaris and jagirs.
