The Indian Post Office launched a commemorative miniature sheet on 9th August 2007 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the First War of Independence of 1857. It is also called a Soldiers Protest. India’s first freedom struggle started on 10th May 1857 in Meerut city of Uttar Pradesh. This struggle became a very important standard for India’s independence which was led by Mangal Pandey. This first freedom struggle progressed and turned into a mass rebellion against British authority. The special thing about this rebellion was that Hindus and Muslims unitedly jumped into the fray in this struggle.

The reason for the rebellion was the introduction of the new Enfield rifle. To load it, soldiers had to cut off the ends of greased cartridges. A rumor spread among the sepoys that the oil used to lubricate the cartridges was a mixture of the fat of pigs and cows and thus to contact meat was an insult to both Muslims and Hindus. In protest against their humiliation and playing with their feelings, the soldiers carried out the country’s first freedom struggle. The freedom struggle of 1857 made the people of India realize the spirit of independence against the British Empire.
