In 1960, 56 Base Post Office was renamed as 1 Central Base Post Office when another Central Base Post Office was opened at Calcutta to provide base postal cover to FPOs of Eastern Command. In 1977, 1 central base post office shifted to a forty-eight-acre site on Rao Tula Ram Marg. The Army HQ SDS unit was merged with 1 central base post office on 1st Feb 1987. Then in 1989, the name of this section was changed to Returned Letter Office. During the COVID-19 pandemic when restrictions were imposed across India, regular flow of mail communication was maintained by 1st CBPO by implementing Mail Contingency Plan. 1 Central base post office has created many histories during its journey of 75 years and will scale new heights in the years to come. On this occasion, the Indian Post Department released the 75th Years of 1 Central Base Post Office India Stamp. The Army realized the lack of a postal system when the Indian Army was sent to the Punjab border to help with law and refugee management. 1 central base post office saga was set in 1947 in New Delhi. New Delhi APO started functioning as a base on 24th October 1947. All FPOs were based on the delivery of mail in Punjab and Jammu Kashmir for receipt and maintenance of postal accounts.
