The Naga Hills District under Assam was established in 1866 with its Headquarters at Samaguting, which was later shifted to Wokha in 1879 and finally to Kohima. The eastern portion of the Naga-inhabited regions was first designated as the Naga Tribal Area and then as the Tuensand Frontier Division.
