Surendranath Jauhar was born on 13th August 1903 and was a resident of Aurobindo Ashram, Delhi. It was during his college days that his interest in politics and the Indian national movement became stronger. He became an active member of the Indian National Congress and joined the Delhi Congress Committee in 1923. Remembering his contribution to the country’s independence, the Postal Department released the Surendranath Jauhar India Stamp. His commitment to this cause led to his arrest for disobeying martial law during British rule and was later sentenced to nine months’ rigorous imprisonment in the Central Jail, Multan.
