Publicly, Japan and India have close ties since a long time. On 30th November 2013, Japan’s Emperor Akihito and his wife Empress Michiko arrived in India for a six-day visit to India. The purpose of the tour to India was to improve the economic and bilateral ties between Japan and India. It was the first time that their Majesties pay an official visit to India. On December 5, 2013, a commemorative stamp was produced by the Department of Posts to mark the first visit of the Japanese Emperor and Empress to India.
