Dhananjay Ramchandra Gadgil was born on 10 April in 1901. He was also known as DR Gadgil. He was an Indian economist, institute builder and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of India. He was the founding director of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune, and the author of the Gadgil Formula, which served as the basis for the allocation of central assistance to states during India’s Fourth and Fifth Five Year Plans.

He is credited for contributing to the growth of the farmers’ cooperative movement in Maharashtra. The Government of India recognized his services in 2008 by issuing a commemorative postage stamp in his honour. He had three sons and one daughter. His parent’s name was Ramchandra Bhargav. His spouse’s name was Pramila and he is also known for the Gadgil formula. He died on the 3rd of May in 1971.
