12-08-2009: Pingali Venkayya India Stamp


Pingali Venkayya was an Indian freedom fighter and follower of Gandhiji. He was born on 2nd August 1876 in Andhra Pradesh to Hanumanth Rayudu. At the age of 19, Pingali Venkayya joined the British Indian Army and was posted in South Africa during the Second Boer War. It was during this time that he recognized the need for an Indian flag, seeing the need for a flag for Indians when saluting the British national flag, the Union Jack. The India Post Department released the postage stamp on August 12 during a program organized at the Secretariat to commemorate the 132 birth anniversary of Pingali Venkayya. The unveiling ceremony of this project was presided over by then Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Rajasekhara Reddy.
