Pingali Venkayya was forced to design a flag for the Indian National Congress in 1906, because he opposed flying the British flag at Congress meetings. The idea was opposed. He began to prepare possible flag designs for the Swaraj movement as a symbol of independence. In 1916, he published a book titled “Bharat Deshaniki Oka Jati Patakam”, which included 30 possible flag designs. Pingali Venkayya presented the initial design of the flag to Gandhiji, which was prepared on Khadi cloth. The inaugural flag consisted of red and green. Following Gandhiji’s guidance, a white stripe was incorporated in the design. The flag in its present form was approved during the meeting of the Constituent Assembly held on July 22, 1947.
