Pa Togan Nengminza Sangma used giant shields made of banana stems to deflect Goro’s bullets, thinking that the metal would cool down upon hitting the banana stem. But this thinking did not work for them, due to which Pa Togan Nengminza Sangma had to bow down to the British with heavy losses, due to which Pa Togan Nengminza died. The State Government of Meghalaya instituted the Pa Thogan Sangma State Awards for Social Services to remember the valour and courage of this great warrior. Along with this, the Government of Meghalaya celebrates the death anniversary of Pa Togan Sangma as a state holiday on 12th December every year.
