Madhya Pradesh is known to be habitat for around 1.5 crore tribal people, many of whom face the significant health challenge pertaining to sickle cell anemia. This genetic disorder is prevalent in tribal-dominated regions that makes community-level screening and genetic counseling vital to managing and preventing its spread. The State Haemoglobinopathy Mission was established to tackle this issue systematically. On November 15, 2021, the Honorable Prime Minister launched a pilot sickle cell screening initiative in Alirajpur and Jhabua districts on the occasion of Janjatiyan Gaurav Diwas. A genetic counseling card program has been introduced to prevent the hereditary spread of the disease, with 46.04 lakh cards distributed so far. Integrated Treatment Centers provide counseling and treatment, including free hydroxyurea, folic acid, and blood transfusions. The National Sickle Cell Portal and a mobile app track and report screening data, while POC Kits enable rapid on-site confirmatory testing. Pregnant women and newborns are prioritized for screening, with a specialized lab at AIIMS Bhopal handling newborn tests within 72 hours of birth.
