Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, born on 18 April 1809 in Entally-Padmapukur, Kolkata, was an Indian poet and assistant principal of Hindu College, Kolkata. He is renowned for his revolutionary ideas and was among the pioneering Indian educators who introduced Western education and science to the youth of Bengal. To commemorate his contribution to India’s development and education, the Indian Postal Department issued a Henri Louis Vivian Derozio India stamp in 2009. Henry Louis Vivian Derozio’s parentage is a mix of cultures and backgrounds. His father Francis Derozio, was an Indo-Portuguese office worker, while his mother, Sophia Johnson Derozio, was of English descent.
