Henry Louis Vivian Derozio received his early education at the David Drummond Dharmatala Academy School, where he attended from the age of 6 to 14. Some attribute his later scepticism towards religion to David Drummond, his school, known for promoting freethinking. Â At the age of 14, Derozio left formal education to join the workforce. Initially, he worked in his father’s office in Kolkata and later moved to his uncle’s indigo factory in Bhagalpur. During this time, he started composing poetry and submitted his work to the India Gazette. His poetic career began to flourish in 1825 when his poems were published in various newspapers and magazines. Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, born on 18 April 1809 in Entally-Padmapukur, Kolkata, was an Indian poet and assistant principal of Hindu College, Kolkata. He is renowned for his revolutionary ideas and was among the pioneering Indian educators who introduced Western education and science to the youth of Bengal. To commemorate his contribution to India’s development and education, the Indian Postal Department issued a Henry Louis Vivian Derozio India stamp in 2009. His father Francis Derozio, was an Indo-Portuguese office worker, while his mother, Sophia Johnson Derozio, was of English descent.
