The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is an international document adopted by the United Nations General Assembly that enshrines the rights of all human beings. Drafted by a United Nations committee headed by Eleanor Roosevelt, it was adopted as a resolution by the General Assembly on 10th December 1948 during its third session at the Palais de Chaillot in France. At that time 48 of the 58 members of the United Nations voted in favour. A foundational text in the history of human rights, the Declaration consists of 30 articles detailing an individual’s fundamental rights and fundamental freedoms.
