Ramgopal Maheshwari was born on 20th November 1911 in Mandolai, near Jaipur, Rajasthan. He was deeply influenced by the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi. Due to which he joined the freedom movement at an early age. He took inspiration from Shri Krishnadas Jaju, a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi at the age of 22. He started his career as a journalist by editing and publishing Maheshwari, the official publication of the Ramgopal Maheshwari community. Remembering his contributions, the Indian Postal Department issued an India stamp on his name. On 8th February 1934, Ramgopal Maheshwari started the bi-weekly newspaper ‘Navbharat’ in Nagpur. ‘Navbharat’ became a major medium of the Indian independence movement.

Description
Ramgopal Maheshwari was put under house arrest in 1939, during the Quit India Movement,and later imprisoned in Nagpur Central Jail. Ramgopal Maheshwari was a staunch advocate for the Hindi language and actively participated in social welfare initiatives. He ardently supported women’s empowerment and, alongside his wife Kaushalya Devi, played a pivotal role in uplifting women while opposing practices like ‘purdah’ and harsh death rituals. In recognition of his significant contributions, Ramgopal Maheshwari received the ‘Samaj Shiromani’ award from the Maheshwari Samaj in 1994.
