The Bible Society of India was founded on 21 February 1811 at the College of Fort William and originated from a meeting called the “Calcutta Auxiliary Bible Society”. This Auxiliary Bible Society, based in Serampore, West Bengal, began efforts to facilitate the distribution of scriptures in languages such as Portuguese, Tamil, Sinhalese, Malayalam and Canarese among existing Christians. In 1950, the Bible Society of India relocated its headquarters from Nagpur to Bangalore, with General Secretary Premanand Mahanty providing leadership during this transition. The Central Office of the Bible Society of India is currently situated in Bangalore, within the state of Karnataka in South India.
