Vitthal Sakharam Page was a freedom fighter as well as a very good politician. He served as the 5th Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Council from 11 July 1960 to 24 April 1978. On 21 July 1910, he was born in Satara district of Maharashtra. He did his law degree from Mumbai. Vitthal Sakharam Page is famous as the pioneer of Indian Employment Guarantee Scheme. The India Post Department issued a postage stamp in recognition of his contributions. His causes of commitment included individual Satyagraha in 1940 and the Quit India Movement of 1942, for which he was sentenced to prison. In 1972, Maharashtra faced a severe drought, due to which the Employment Guarantee Scheme was launched.
