Raja Ram Mohan Roy is best known for abolishing child marriage and especially sati. He founded the Brahmo Samaj in 1928. On 22nd May 1772, was born in Radhanagar village of Hooghly district of West Bengal. He is also popularly known as the founder of the Bengal Renaissance. The Indian Post Department released a postage stamp on the 250th birth anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, praising his struggle against the practice of sati, untouchability and social reform. Raja Ram Mohan Roy, who translated the scriptures into English with the promotion of unity throughout India, founded the Calcutta Unitarian Society.

The establishment of Brahmo Samaj which was visited by Raja Ram Mohan Roy played a good role in modernization as well as reformation of the entire Indian society. He established many schools, changing India’s education system from Sanskrit to English-based education. Raja Ram Mohan Roy influenced social and religious ideas about the reforms of Hinduism. He said that education is the only important means of social reform. He died on 27th September 1833 at the age of only 61.
