During the Quit India Movement of 1942, Shyam Narayan Singh gave an emotional nationalist speech in Patna. After listening to his speech, seven students were inspired to hoist the Indian national flag at the Patna Secretariat. In the ensuing protest, all seven students who went to hoist the national flag at the Patna Secretariat lost their lives. Shyam Narayan Singh managed to escape from this incident. The British government had issued orders to shoot him on sight. A reward of Rs 5000 was also kept for his capture. After some time he was caught and lodged in Biharsharif jail of Bihar. Shyam Narayan Singh was not only a dedicated Indian freedom fighter but also a politician. He represented East Bihar in the Central Legislative Assembly. He was born in 1901 in Nalanda district of Bihar. Inspired by the ideologies of Chandrashekhar Azad and other revolutionary leaders, he decided to enter politics during his college days. Shyam Narayan Singh realized the importance of electoral politics in the struggle for Indian independence from British colonial rule. The Government of India commemorated Shyam Narayan Singh by issuing a postage stamp in his honor. When Mahatma Gandhi called for the British to leave India in 1942, nationalist fervor spread across the country.
