Central Institute of Plastics and Technology (CIPET) was established in 1968 in Chennai by the Indian Government with a help of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the International Labour Organization (ILO). The primary objective of the establishment of the CIPET institute was to create manpower in different sectors of Plastics Engineering and Technology. There was no similar institute was in existence in the country before the establishment of CIPET. International Labour Organization (ILO) worked as executing agency for the CIPET.

Central Institute of Plastics and Technology (CIPET) plays a vital responsibility in producing service opportunities, particularly for jobless and underemployed youth, promoting entrepreneurs though various skill development training programs for polymer and associated industries. They have a Quality Management System for delivering Technical help in the form of Consultancy Services in the fields of design, tooling, plastics processing, testing & quality assurance and Inspection Services to the plastics industries. The Institute has delivered about 4 Lakh workers, 50,000 specialists, 5,000 engineers and 1.72 Lakh unemployed were trained during the last 3 years.
