The battalion was selected for parachute duty. The 3rd Parachute was selected as a 2nd Indian Airborne Division battalion during the Maharaja’s Light Infantry in 1946, after which the battalion was sent to Jammu and Kashmir and fought in the attack on Pakistani forces at their Nishera and Jhangar. On 15 April 1952, a separate unit of the battalion was formed, named the Parachute Regiment Unit. In 1961, the battalion participated in the liberation of Goa, after that in 1965, in the Indo-Pakistan war, the battalion conducted operations in the Lahore theatre. In 1971, Batalityan achieved the feat of trying out the first Indian Army air raid with para-dropping and becoming the first Indian Army unit to enter Dhaka. The battalion was raised on 6th September 1797 as a treaty with the Raja of Travancore for the Bombay Presidency and the 2nd Battalion as a treaty with the 5th Regiment of Travancore Regiment Native Infantry. During the First World War the battalion fought against Turkiye in Mesopotamia and won the Battle of Sheba, in the Second World War, the battalion achieved the formidable Italian victory of Keren, along with Kut-El-Amara and Ctesiphon Bey Khuni Amle. Ten Indians were selected and N. K. Yashwant Ghadge was awarded the Division in Italy and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry.
