Chaudhary Devi Lal was born on 25 September 1914 in Teja Kheda village, now located in the Sirsa district of Haryana. His father’s name was Lekhram Sihag, a Jat resident of Chautala village, who owned 2750 bighas of land. Chaudhary Devi Lal had his education up to the middle-school level. Chaudhary Devi Lal was an ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi and actively participated in India’s struggle for independence from the British Raj. Chaudhary Devi Lal was an eminent Indian politician and statesman, who was famous for his significant contribution to the political scene of the country. He held the respected position of the sixth Deputy Prime Minister of India for two different terms. On 25 September 2001, the Chaudhary Devi Lal India stamp was issued by the Indian Postal Department on the occasion of his birthday. He served as the Chief Minister of Haryana during the period from 1987 to 1989. Along with being a prominent figure in Indian politics, he was also the founder of the Indian National Lok Dal. He was fondly called Tau, which means uncle.
