Thomson Civil Engineering College was established in 1847 and then its name was changed to Roorkee College. The University of Roorkee completed 150 years of its establishment in 1997. The Roorkee College of Engineering was converted into India’s first technical university in 1949. IIT Roorkee has made a record of providing the best scientists and technology in the world. It has always provided a path for other universities to follow. In 2001, IIT Roorkee was declared an Institute of National Importance of India and renamed as Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee by an Act of India. The Bengal Engineers College was started by Lieutenant Baird Smith in Saharanpur in 1845 to train Indian youth in civil engineering, and 20 Indian youth were admitted in 1846.
