All India Railwaymen’s Federation (AIRF) is the most important trade union representing Indian Railway employees. It was established on February 16 1925, with a membership strength of 1.4 million. Socialists and communists were leading the All India Railwaymen’s Federation in the late 1940s. Socialist Jayaprakash Narayan served as president of the association from 1947 to 1953, while future Chief Minister of West Bengal Jyoti Basu held the post of vice-president.
