Maharaja Surajmal captured Bharatpur from Khemkaran Sogaria, son of Rustam, another Jat ruler, in 1733 and later founded the city of Bharatpur in 1743. To strengthen the city, he built an extensive protective wall around it and made Bharatpur his residence from 1753. Lohagarh Fort, built by Maharaja Surajmal in the 18th century, was considered an impregnable fort. It is the only fort in India which was never conquered militarily. Even the British attempted to capture it during several attacks under the leadership of General Lake in 1805, but could not conquer the fort.
