India provided an essential and helpful role in the development of the Republic of Korea (ROK) after the independence of the Republic of Korea in 1945. Mr. K P S Menon of India was the Chairman of the 9-Member UN Commission set to hold elections in Korea in 1947. In 1948, the first successful general election was held in South Korea, on 15 August 1948, Korea was established as the Republic of Korea. Currently, the relationship between India and the Republic of Korea (ROK) has made great improvement. In 2015 the relationship between both countries was promoted to “Special Strategic Partnership”. Both countries provide help in Trade Commerce, Science and Technology, Defence, Culture, People to People Exchange etc.

In May 2017, the relationship between India and the Republic of Korea witnessed new momentum after the appointment of President Moon Jae-in’s management. Both nations had three VVIP visits in the last year. In 2018, President Moon Jae-in and First Lady Kim Jung-sook visited India and in February 2019 Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Republic of Korea (ROK). Both countries are discovering areas of further collaboration under New Southern Policy and India’s Act East Policy.
