Veer Surendra Sai was born on January 23, 1809, in the village of Khinda, in the Sambalpur district of present-day Odisha. From a young age, Sai exhibited a fierce spirit and a strong sense of justice, traits that would later define his revolutionary career. He belonged to a royal family and was in line for the throne of Sambalpur, but his path was obstructed by the British authorities who favored a different succession. Sai’s resistance against British rule began in the early 1820s and continued for nearly four decades. His leadership was marked by relentless guerrilla warfare tactics, mobilizing local tribes and common folk to challenge the oppressive colonial regime. The First War of Indian Independence in 1857 saw an intensification of his efforts. Veer Surendra Sai and his followers waged a prolonged struggle, harassing British forces and disrupting their operations in the region. The 30 December 1986 stamp is a significant tribute to Veer Surendra Sai, immortalizing his contributions and ensuring that his story of bravery, sacrifice, and patriotism continues to inspire future generations.
