The timeline of MahaKavi Magha is debated by scholars as the Kavirajamarga references to his work suggest that he existed no later than the 8th century. Hermann Jacobi has proposed a 6th-century placement, while Lorenz Franz Kielhorn and others have placed them in the late 7th century, citing a historical record from present-day Rajasthan that mentioned the reign of king Varmalata around 625 AD. MahaKavi Magh, a Sanskrit poet from the Srimali Brahmin family, served in the court of King Varmalata of Rajasthan. His famous epic Shishupala Vadh was taken from the Mahabharata, which depicted Krishna’s use of the chakra to subdue King Shishupala. Maha Kavi Magha’s fame rests mainly on this work, although Vallabhdev’s verses are not quoted in Sishupala Vadh which would suggest the existence of other works by him now lost. Respected among Sanskrit critics, Magha’s works were extensively referenced. The Indian Postal Department issued a postage stamp recognizing his contribution to the Sanskrit language.
