The foundation stone of the India International Center was laid in 1960 during the honeymoon visit of Japanese Prince Akihito to India. In 1962, the second President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the center was initially inaugurated by its founding president, Dr. C.D. Had led. The center was formally inaugurated in 1996 under the aegis of Dr. Karan Singh, President of IIC. Notably, the Gandhi-King Plaza within the center, which dedicates the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 21 January 1970.
