The Sangeet Natak Akademi was established in 1952 by the Ministry of Education and its first chairman, Dr PV Rajamannar was appointed. The first President of India Dr Rajendra Prasad inaugurated it in 1953 in the Parliament House. It functions as the apex body of the arts in the country to promote the cultural heritage of India.
